Don't Switch Your Boiler Off Completely
One of the most common mistakes homeowners make is leaving their boiler completely inactive for several months.
Many heating engineers recommend using your boiler's summer mode, if available, rather than turning the system off entirely. This allows the boiler to continue providing hot water while keeping the central heating switched off.
If your boiler doesn't have a dedicated summer setting, consider running the heating for 10–15 minutes every few weeks. This helps keep pumps, valves and other moving components working freely and can reduce the risk of parts seizing during long periods of inactivity.
Many modern boilers also feature a "Holiday" or "Away" mode, which keeps the system safely ticking over to prevent pipes from seizing without impacting energy use.
