Your boiler works hard to keep your home warm and your hot water flowing — especially during the colder months in the UK. But like all mechanical systems, it can develop faults over time. One of the most obvious boiler issues is when you suddenly have no heating or hot water. This can be caused by a faulty thermostat, low pressure, a pilot light issue, or a circulation problem.
Before calling an engineer, check that your thermostat is correctly set and functioning, and that the boiler’s pressure gauge is within the normal range (typically 1–1.5 bar).
What to look out for:
Low pressure is a frequent and easily noticeable issue. If your boiler’s pressure drops below around 1 bar, the system may shut down as part of its safety design.
Causes can include recent bleeding of radiators, small leaks, or a failing expansion vessel.
Spotting the warning:

Older boilers with a pilot light can develop ignition issues if the thermocouple or burner becomes faulty or dirty.
A pilot light that won’t stay lit or glows yellow instead of a steady blue requires prompt attention.
What to notice:
If your boiler doesn’t respond to the thermostat or programmer, first check batteries and settings.
If controls still don’t work, it may indicate faulty electronics.
Red flags:
If you find yourself constantly resetting your boiler, or it repeatedly shuts down mid-cycle, this signals deeper issues like low pressure, sensor faults, or condensate blockages.
Warning signs:
A big unexpected increase in energy bills can be an indicator of a wider issue with your system. Certain faults can cause a drop in boiler efficiency and should be investigated further.
